CMS is using the 2020 ICD-10-PCS Code Set to address “inconsistent, illogical, and impossible to apply” codes. The update for FY 2020 will address two major families of codes where the data has been of poor quality due to codes that were impossible to assign. The proposed changes for FY 2020 include removal of the bifurcation of arteries from all except cardiac (affecting over 1800 codes), and removal of the external approach option for breast surgeries (they really are inside!).
